Map

Location:
The farm is situated roughly 100 km from Port Elizabeth towards the foothills of Cockscomb Mountain.  The Cockscomb area is located roughly halfway between Uitenhage and Steytlerville, and is easily accessible via a well maintained gravel road.

Description:
The farm is situated on the Northern slope of the Grootwinterhoekberge of Baviaanskloof -"Valley of Baboons"- fame. The boundary extends well onto the crest of the ridge providing breathtaking views of Cockscomb Mountain and the expansive karoo to the North with distant sea views to the South. The terrain is characterised by Cape Fold Mountains with huge dramatic cliff faces and spectacular rock formations, one rock prominence in particular has piercing holes with light filtering through them. A massive amphitheatre gives way to a steep sided gorge carved through time by a crystal clear perennial stream with several waterfalls and becoming seasonal at its lower reaches. This is a true unspoilt wilderness area and with limited road access offers unparalleled hiking opportunities.

Veld types:
This farm is ecologically diverse consisting of a mosaic of vegetation types.
The low lying areas are characterised by succulent rich karroid broken veld interspersed with excellent browse in the form of acacia's, jacket plum, common guarri, and spekboom as well as good grass cover along the drainage lines. Grazing is also supplemented by a variety of edible karoo bushes. Small pockets of afro-montaine forest occur along the floor of the steep sided gorge with species such as Tierhout, Candlewood, Red Stinkwood and Milk wood being present.

In the high lying areas, the more mountainous Southern section is characteristic of the vegetation of the Cape Floral Kingdom showing the typical components of fynbos, namely: proteas (e.g. sugarbush and pincushions), ericas and restioids. Grassy fynbos occurs on the drier, lower slopes and on the relatively wet plateaus. The grass species Pentaschistis eriostoma and Erica pectinifolia grow on the shallow soils derived from weathered quartzite. Indigenous cycads (Encephalartos longifolius), survivors from an ancient era, are found in abundance.

Rainfall:
The farm falls in a summer rainfall area; however, August records the highest monthly figures and the annual average is 350 mm.

Improvements:
This farm has a basic house offering 3 beds and 2 bathrooms as well as various outbuildings like 2 garages, a storeroom and workers accommodation. There is a landing strip for light aircraft and a 4x4 trail in need of some attention. Water comes from 2 boreholes and a 40mm PVC pipe that runs continuously with water being gravity fed from a pool along the perennial stream. There are 3 earth dams. The farm is fenced into 3 camps with stock fencing and the fence of the remote Northern section needs some repair. Old lands in front of the dwelling allow for small-scale irrigation. There are plenty of rocks lying about with which to build an impressive stone lodge or even generate an income by selling rocks to nurseries and landscapers.

Wildlife species:
Includes: Kudu, Mountain Reedbuck, Klipspringer, Steenbok, Grey Duiker, Grysbok, Bush pig and Cape Mountain Leopard as well as other smaller mammals. Bird species of special interest include Black Eagle, Cape rock-jumper and Orange-breasted Sunbird.

This farm is not particularly well suited for a commercial farming enterprise; however, it would be ideal for an eco-tourism venture designed around special interest groups. The natural beauty of the land forms as well as the array of plant and animal species will prove an absolute delight for any amateur or accomplished botanist and birdwatcher. The opportunity to establish an exhilarating 4x4 route is a definite option as well as conducting guided overnight hikes into the mountains. Or simply indulge in your own private mountain retreat.
